Insights from Gensler’s US Work From Home survey 2020

Across California, indoor businesses have been shut down again since last week including the non-essential business offices.

Working From Home has been a new norm for the past few months, and we would like to share some public opinion from Gensler’s US Work From Home survey 2020. (*Gensler is one of the best known global architecture and design firm.)

The study was conducted over 2300+ full time US office workers at companies of 100 or more people across 10 different industries from April 16 to May 4, 2020.  Here are the main findings from the study:

  1. Only 12% of US workers want to work from home full time
  2. Younger generations are less productive at home
  3. People expect to return to a different workplace

Let’s see more in details for the each points!

1. Only 12% of US workers want to work from home full time

Most want to spend the majority of their normal workweek at the office, while maintaining the ability to work from home for part of the week.

Furthermore, the study surprisingly shows that 44% of people wants to return to office 100%.  And the top reasons employees want to come to the office are as follows:

  1. 74% – People are what they miss most about the office
  2. 55% – Collaborating with others is easier at office
  3. 51% – Staying up to date on what others are working on is easier at office

Younger respondents are most likely to say that they are struggling to stay up to date while working from home.

2. Younger generations are less productive at home

Despite their technological preparedness for mobile work, younger workers report a far more challenging experience working from home than their older peers. They are less likely to feel as if they’ve made a difference or completed the work they needed to do at the end of a typical workday, according to survey responses.

3. People expect to return to a different workplace

What employees rank as most important to making them feel comfortable returning to the workplace are shown above.

In summary, people want to return to a different workplace: more space, less desk sharing, and more support for mobile and virtual work.
