vol. 16 Aromatherapy as antimicrobial and disinfection in workplaces

aroma

This is the second part of our aroma special! Last time we talked about the overview of aromatherapy and this time we would like to talk in detail about the functions of essential oils.

Aromatherapy is said to have originated in Europe, but people have been successfully incorporating the benefits and efficacy of plants into their lives since ancient times.

The ancient Egyptians used plants as a preservative for mummies or used as antiseptic and antibacterial purposes against the plague in the 17th century. Tea tree essential oil has long been used by the indigenous Australians as a disinfectant, antiseptic and remedy for injuries and or minor cuts.

In the previous article, we mentioned that plants store aromatic substances as  means of survival. To prevent insects and birds from eating them or infecting them with fungus, plants have inherent antimicrobial and disinfectant properties, and we humans can benefit from these properties as well.

Essential oils that inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses include tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus and cypress.

Essential oils themselves are the concentrated essence of plants and are not recommended for use on bodies. (When used for skin care or massage, essential oils must be diluted at a certain concentration).

In this article, we would like to focus on how essential oils can be integrated into the environment we live in.

Spraying essential oils into a space not only helps to improve the air quality and keep it clean, but it can also have the benefit of relaxing and refreshing you through the inherent comfort of the scent.

There are a number of ways to spread the scent in a space by using tabletop diffuser with a fan or to naturally evaporate scent by dropping essential oils onto diffuser stones. Or for offices and other larger spaces, incorporating commercial style diffuser that spreads essential oils into small particles is a great option.

At Aroma All-in-One diffuser

This professional grade diffuser from At Aroma has the capability of timer setting along with the frequency and amount of essential oils to spread into the space.  It covers up to 1600sqf. so it’s a great option for commercial spaces. It can be hooked up with the airduct to keep the air circulation clean in the commercial facilities.

However, if you spray only the scent of peppermint, for example, just because it’s expected to be effective scent in the space, there may be a chance that someone in the same shared space may not like the scent of Peppermint.  It’s quite normal for people to have different sensory preferences.
This is where the At Aroma’s “blending” technique comes in handy. Rather than simply seasoning a dish with salt, it’s a mixture of pepper, herbs, meat, fish, vegetables, and other flavors that can make foods tastier.

The same is true for aromas.  Even if you don’t like the scent on its own, mixing few scents together has the advantage of making them more acceptable to larger crowds. Recently there has been a lot of experimentation with essential oils, and I’d like to share one data point related to antiviral essential oils.

The test was conducted using the Eucalyptus based At Aroma’s fragrance series CLEAN air compared to the amount of airborne viruses before and 180 minutes after spraying the fragrance, and the result showed a virus removal rate of over 90%.

(*1) This is not a proof-of-concept effect in the actual space where the product is used. It does not guarantee that it is effective against all bacteria and viruses. (*2) Although the product is effective in inhibiting bacteria and viruses, it does not guarantee the prevention of infection.

As you can see from the test results , we recommend it for places where air cannot be replaced or where air tends to be trapped. We have At Aroma’s All-in-One diffuser at our office entrance, which keeps the air in the office fresh. Also the eucalyptus blend aromas provide anti-bacterial protection at the same time.

Let’s take advantage of the essential oils that support our lives, not only mentally but also from an environmental standpoint, and enjoy a more comfortable new lifestyle!

As part of our space design service, we offer At Aroma’s essential oil blends and diffusers. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in trying scent samples.
